Paul O Connell book ‘The Battle’ is set to be a huge hit!

They queued for four hours in advance to meet the man who is without a doubt a true Limerick legend.

Coinciding with the release of his much-anticipated autobiography, Paul O’Connell signed copies of his book, The Battle, in O’Mahony’s Bookshop .

Over 500 people queued for hours to meet former rugby legend Paul O’Connell at his book signing in Limerick city this past Sunday, eager to get a signed copy of his book The Battle.

The book signing was due to begin at 2pm, however after The Battle author observed images of the lengthy queues on I Love Limerick’s social media, he arrived early so as not to disappoint fans on his home ground in the Treaty City.

Even before he was due to meet his legions of fans, he had planned to sign more than 200 copies of The Battle, which were pre-ordered by customers who couldn’t attend the signing.

The Battle was co-written with Alan English, former editor of the Limerick Leader and current editorial director of Iconic Newspapers, which own the Leader. He also attended the signing along with many family members.

I had the honour of interviewing Paul at the book signing. With typical modesty, when asked how he felt about the phenomenal turnout, he joked that the book might be an easy Christmas present for people, as many queued to purchase several books for friends and family members.

The former Munster, Ireland and Lion’s captain described The Battle as “the full story. I think it’s very honest and I hope people will enjoy it,” he said.

I asked him what exactly was ‘The Battle’ he faced, he revealed, “the battle was mainly with myself, the injuries, playing high-pressure games, trying to win things, trying to be successful,” and told me, “blaming myself when we lost a game made me better.”

I asked him how it felt to be so loved by the people of Limerick, “I am very proud of my Limerick roots. I love living here, the sense of humour the people have, what a great place to live.”

I admire Paul so much, not just for his sporting achievements, but for his soul. Paul is a man who is truly proud of our beautiful city as he has said himself on numerous occasions and proved undoubtedly over the years through his involvement with positive campaigns and charity work. Congrats Paul. All of Limerick are rooting for you!

Sparkle and Shine ball in association with Keith Duffy Foundation had to be one of the most glamorous events to take place in Limerick this year and was a successful night. The ball was a star studded event with well known faces such as Miriam O’Callaghan, the patron of Clionas Foundation, Keith Duffy representing the Keith Duffy Foundation, Celia Holman Lee and Leanne Moore, one of the ambassadors of the Cliona Foundation.

The night began in the main lobby of the Limerick Strand Hotel where the elegant and extremely well dressed guests were greeted with prosecco and a tiered Ferrero Roche pyramid. The guests gasped as they entered the main reception area as the room was completely transformed into a wonderland. This year the Sparkle and Shine initiative and the Keith Duffy Foundation, founded by Keith Duffy, decided to join forces to raise funds for their respective chosen charities and to give the Midwest region a night that has become one of the most high-profile events of this year.

The entertainment was never ending with Cole Page flying in from England for the night to perform. The guest were on their feet and then on their chairs very literally as Cold Page created an incredible atmosphere in the room.

In addition to Cole Page phenomenal performance, the Multi Award Winning Classical Singer, Amanda Neri will also be performing. Amanda has captivated audiences in such venues in Ireland as The Helix, Cork Opera House, Fota House, Bantry House, Longueville House, Siamsa Tire Theatre, Cork City Hall. The giving never ended on the night as the tombola raffle rose a whopping €4,000 alone. Then Keith Duffy took to the stage along with his trusty assistant Richard Lynch to start the auction! Members of the audience really dug deep for the charities as there was more than €35,000 for Clionas Foundation, Symptomatic Breast Unit and Mid Western Cancer Foundation.

Some of the auction prizes included his and hers Calvin Klein watches from Keanes Jeweler’s in Limerick and Bruce Springsteen tickets, afternoon tea in the Westbury hotel and a stay in the five star Conrad Hotel, Framed drawing by Martin Finnin with signed book of his works and concert tickets to concerts such as Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and Little Mix.

The Keith Duffy Foundation has chosen Cliona’s Foundation to be their chosen charity for its inaugural event in Limerick. The aim of Cliona’s Foundation is to give financial support to families of children with life limiting illnesses, to help them pay for the vast amount of non-medical costs associated with caring for a seriously ill child, “I’m delighted to help raise funds for Cliona’s Foundation for the work they do, it is something that’s close to my heart as I have seen the financial burden on families caring for a critically ill child and as part of my work with the Keith Duffy Foundation which aims to provide support and financial assistance to a number of chosen children’s charities throughout the country. I am also thrilled that Miriam O Callaghan, a much respected broadcaster and the official patron of my chosen charity Cliona’s Foundation, is coming to show her support on the night.” Sparkle and Shine Ball in association with the Keith Duffy

The night was a complete success and the guest who attended partied on into the late hours having given back to these well-deserved charities. We cannot wait to see what next years event will be like and wish all the charities the best of luck!

The Sparkle & Shine Easter Ball 2016 in association with the Keith Duffy Foundation will take place on Easter Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday, March 26^th, at the Limerick Strand Hotel.

Miriam O Callaghan, one of RTE’s most loved and respected presenters will co- present the evening along with former Boyzone star, actor and philanthropist Keith Duffy. Entertainment for the star-studded event will be provided by world-class performer Cole Page and his band. An exclusive live auction will be the highlight for many, along with an extensive raffle supported by local businesses.

This year the Sparkle and Shine initiative and the Keith Duffy Foundation, founded by Keith Duffy, have decided to join forces to raise funds for their respective chosen charities and to give the Midwest region a night that is set to become one of the most high profile events of the year.

Miriam O Callaghan, one of RTE’s most loved and respected faces will be Master of Ceremonies for the glamorous event. Miriam has become a household name in Ireland following her success on RTE’s Primetime and Saturday Night with Miriam.

There will be a live fundraiser auction compered by none other than Keith Duffy himself with some seriously fabulous treats up for grabs. World-renowned singer Cole Page will provide entertainment for the evening. Cole has performed for dignitaries from the worlds of politics, music and sport including Bill Clinton, Sir Alex Ferguson and Robbie Williams. There will be Easter favours at each seat, spot prizes, table prizes and gift bags and a raffle with a guaranteed prize of a minimum value of €100 at each table with plenty more opportunities to win prizes throughout the night.

Clionas Foundation celebrate raising one million euro with Keith Duffy

Clionas Foundation celebrate

To celebrate their 9 year anniversary, Cliona’s Foundation Annual Celebratory Night 2016 took place in Bulgaden Castle last Saturday evening. The evening of celebrations kicked off at 9pm and featured a VIP appearance from singer, actor and philanthropist Keith Duffy on behalf of his charity the Keith Duffy Foundation.

Prior to the event Keith made a captivating statement of why he got involved with Cliona’s Foundation, “I’m delighted to be part of the celebrations and to help the Foundation with the work they do, it is something that’s close to my heart as I have seen the financial burden on families caring for a critically ill child and as part of my work with the Keith Duffy Foundation which aims to provide support and financial assistance to a number of chosen children’s charities throughout the country.”

Keith and his wife Lisa arrived at Bulgaden castle at 9pm having travelled down from Dublin specifically for the event. It was a heart filled moment when Brendan and Terry Ring, the founders of Cliona’s Foundation met Keith, as it was the first time they had met in person. The night kicked off in celebration as Keith announced that Cliona’s Foundation has risen €1,000,000 to date which is now providing funding for over 300 families.

Brendan expressed his gratitude for Keith, referring to Keith as “an inspirational man” that has profoundly helped the foundation getting to an astonishing goal of one million euro. The celebrations didn’t stop there as Keith did a Q&A in front of the crowd of more than 300 people.

Keith made an inspirational speech as he quoted “united we stand, divided we fall” when referring to working with Brendan and Terry. Cliona Ring was never far from the hearts of her parents, Brendan and Terry, as they specifically picked the month of January to celebrate the annual event as Cliona’s birthday is at the beginning of the month.

Richard Lynch of I Love Limerick introduced Keith to Brendan and Terry and he never realised he had met Cliona when she was a little girl. Last week Brendan and Terry sent him old photos they found of Cliona meeting Boyzone when she was a little girl. Keith felt that Cliona brought him and the Foundation together and he told the crowd that Cliona and his good friend Stephen Gately were now “watching over them like two angels from heaven.”

Brendan referred to the continued struggles of parents with ill children, “we realize from our own experience the expense of travelling into a hospital on a continual basis, it’s paying for the simple things like a newspaper or lunch.” Having raised one million euro Cliona’s foundation will continue to help families pay for these expenses in the coming year! Basketball Blitz event in aid of Honouring Aaron

An U10’s Basketball Blitz event in aid of Honouring Aaron, a Limerick fundraising initiative, will be held on Sunday December 6 at Presentation Primary School gym on Sexton Street.

Honouring Aaron, previously titled ‘Remembering Aaron’, is an organisation which raises funds for a number of children’s charities in the Limerick area.

The event will see a number of U10’s Limerick basketball teams take part, followed by a cake sale. There will be a cover charge on the door and a charge for entering the basketball blitz.

Honouring Aaron, set up in memory of nine-year-old Aaron who died tragically in 2014, has raised up to €15,000 in total since its establishment.

Cheques will be presented on the day to charities who have been the beneficiaries of the initiative, with Jerry O’Dea, Metropolitan Mayor of Limerick, in attendance.

This will be the second year running of the Basketball Blitz in memory of Aaron, with a fun-filled event having taken place in 2014.

Basketball meant a great deal to Aaron as a member of the Limerick Laker’s, whose jersey was retired last year in a mark of respect and remembrance at the blitz event in 2014.

Temple Street will remain as an annual beneficiary of Honouring Aaron, with two Limerick charities, The Blue Box and Sophie’s Journey Foundation, both benefiting from the fundraising initiatives of Honouring Aaron in the future.

Cecelia O’Flaherty, Aaron’s mother, spoke about Honouring Aaron and why Temple Street Children’s Hospital was her chosen target for the donation.

“After Aaron left Galway University Hospital he was brought to Temple Street Children’s Hospital. They were so good to him there.

“They were all touched by Aaron in the time that he was there, they would bring him presents all the time,” Cecelia said.

Since its establishment, Honouring Aaron has raised money for a number of local charities, such as; Claughan GAA Club, Limerick Laker’s Basketball Club, Cliona’s Foundation and the Bumbleance.

Cecelia, a Civil Defence officer, acknowledges the support offered by the people of Limerick, showing her gratitude for every effort made, saying that all the support she has seen has been “overwhelming.”

The 2014 UL Sport Kids Run took place in Aaron’s memory last year, the day before the Barrington’s Hospital Great Limerick Run.

Funds raised from the Great Limerick Run go to Galway University Hospital, where he was airlifted to after his accident, and to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin, where he spent his final days.

Sports Stars Niamh Kavanagh, Paul Browne and Joy Neville have joined the ranks of Clionas Foundation Purple Platoon to take part in Adare to Survive in Limerick on Sunday the 27^th of September. They are also calling on others to take up the challenge and complete the course to raise funds and awareness for Cliona’s Foundation.

If you’re up for the challenge then complete the 7.5km military style obstacle course with the Purple Platoon team. By joining the Clionas Foundation Purple Platoon, €5 of your registration fee will go directly to Cliona’s Foundation. You will be sent a combat pack that includes one of our purple running t-shirts, wear this to distinguish our division. Invite friends, family and colleagues to join you on this mission, and help make this our largest ever squad.

HonouringAaron, an organisation which raises funds for a number of children’s charities in the Limerick area, donated €4,227 to Temple Street Children’s Hospital this past May.

The initiative, set up in memory of nine-year-old Aaron O’Flaherty who died tragically in 2014, has raised up to €15,000 in total since its establishment.

Cecilia O’Flaherty, Aaron’s mother, spoke about Remembering Aaron and why Temple Street Children’s Hospital was her chosen target for the donation.

Limerick Pride Parade 2015

Limerick Pride Parade 2015 was held this year, Sat July 18, for huge crowds coming out to participate in this year’s festivities.

There has never been more reason to celebrate Limerick Pride than there has been this year, because of Ireland’s decision to legalise same-sex marriage earlier in May. National pride was celebrated after the marriage referendum but local pride in the decision was celebrated today, with three marchers carrying a Limerick flag near the front of the parade, with the words; “Limerick Said Yes”, printed on the front.

Elaborate outfits, colourful posters and rainbow pride flags covered the streets of Limerick City. A number of groups donated their time and effort to take part in the parade, as well as political parties Fianna Fáil, Labour, Sinn Féin and AAA showing their support.

The parade, leaving City Hall at 3pm, wound its way around our city, through O’Connell Street, Mallow Street and Henry Street, before arriving back at City Hall. The Parade Grand Marshall was Myles Breen, who rode in the back of an open-top car as it travelled the route of the parade. Myles, in his ever cheerful and charismatic manner, interacted with the crowds as he passed, and later referred to them as he addressed the growing crowds at the after-party: “I’m sure everyone who marched in the parade with me must have been overwhelmed by the response of people and with the positivity, respect and just sheer acceptance.”

The parade after-party, hosted by Paul Ryder, held performances by The Voice contestant Niall O’Halloran and Retro Fusion Gospel, a unique group that mixes different genres of music. Myles Breen performed his annual tea dance and took on a new spin, integrating elements of the rumba dance style.

Lisa Daly, chairperson of Limerick Pride, said the event was only possible ‘because of everyone coming together, not just as a country but for everyone behind the scenes, to send a very strong message that we’re all finally equal.”

Richard Lynch, Festival Organiser, said a few words at the after-party in The Orchard, saying ‘that now the LGBT community were equal in the eyes of the world in terms of Marriage Equality, our next goal is for complete equal rights of our transgendered brothers and sisters.’

Richard interviewed people on the day about what was the next step for the LGBT community in terms of equal human rights and the general consensus was that Trans people are among the most vulnerable members of Irish society and experience high levels of stigmatisation and marginalisation. Research shows suicidality, regular harassment and violence and systemic discrimination are commonplace. The good news is since June trans people in Ireland will now not have to rely on testimony from psychiatrists or endocrinologists to have their gender recognised by the state.

Instead, their self-declaration will be accepted, for the purpose of updating passports, driving licences, obtaining a new birth cert, and getting married. While the legislation is still not perfect, and we must not forget those under 18, non-binary people and people with an intersex condition, it is wonderful that Ireland recognised its citizens’ rights to determine our own identity. We are in a new era for trans rights in Ireland.

The Climax party, held in Dolan’s Warehouse on Saturday, wrapped up the day with performance by Dragged Up, later followed by DJ Ruth.

This year’s festival was focused around the theme of not only accepting others, but also accepting and expressing yourself.
